And now it's time for the social media tip. Alright, this is the part of the show where I share a little social news with you little tips tricks sometimes. So on Twitter, they're coming out with a new ad product aimed at all of us users. That's right, for 299 we're gonna have something called Twitter blue that has such amazing features as undue tweets, color themes, and custom app icons. If you're thinking to yourself, Jeff, they're only charging 299 for that. I know, right? Okay, just kidding. That was sarcasm a so 299 to undo a tweet, you know, there's a free version right now. It's called delete the tweet. Here's the reality. You can't undo anything on twitter at all goes into a database. Even when you delete a tweet, it still exists. It just can't be seen or searched by normal person on Twitter, but it still exists. So I don't know about these things paying for I app icons and color themes. Is that really important? Aren't those the things that eventually made my space completely unusable when people just had carte blanche over what things look like? Keep it simple. Just use Twitter microblog. And let's just keep it kind of easy. There's one thing called collection where you can organize your tweets. Say, here's my funny tweets. Here's my tweets in in salt, my mother in law, here's a tweet so they'll insult you. So I don't know. So I'm gonna keep my nap. But just look out for that. It's tonight. If you're a power user and you got to have the latest toys and Then you got 299 a month to spare. Boom, there you go Twitter blues for you. And that's the social media tip.

Alright ladies and gentlemen excited to introduce my next guest legendary actor. Ed Asner, Ed, welcome to the show. Thank you. How are you, sir? I'm fine. Well, it's nice of you to be here. I'm excited. I just finished reading your book, son of a junk man. My life from the west bottoms of Kansas City to the bright lights of Hollywood.

Ed Asner 7:32

The nudes were exciting in that book. weren't they?

Jeff Dwoskin 7:36

Yeah, so I was surprised how many nude photos you did put in it. From all times in during your career, too, which I thought was a very brave move from our bar mitzvah. Yeah, with the tally? taller. So you see everything. fringes excited a lot? Well, yeah, I can imagine the way that we kind of just with the wind hit, I'm just right, that'd be perfect. I didn't realize this was gonna get x rated this fast. But this is I'm fascinated. You talk a lot about your Judaism. It's kind of spread throughout the book. And I love that. I told my wife I said, I love this book. And she says, Why is it because on page three, he said pay saw my grandfather made wine for pace off. I go. I can't even imagine the argument. He had to get in with the publisher to not say Passover, like no one's gonna know it pays off means and in that field. This book was written for me. I loved it's

Ed Asner 8:34

good. I'm glad. Of course. We've alienated all the non Jews out there who might be doing this same podcast. So I'll bill you for all of those that we don't get.

Jeff Dwoskin 8:46

Well, I think they can figure it out just now the way to Google. They can just google Pacer. And they can they can know exactly what you're talking about. What was it like growing up as an Orthodox Jew in Kansas City? Well,

Ed Asner 8:57

there wasn't much going up without that. I mean, I went there, fader was Hagar name school, religious school. I'd hate her every day of my life. We got an American born Rabbi while I was still young, He instituted rules that had me going, he also knew my father, who was orthodox. If the rabbi said shit, you would squat, it was not easy to divide it by, especially when he was giving you when he wanted you to come to school. So all my life and seeing this was spent going to public school, having friends if I could, and then immediately going to pay her afterwards. Finally, I began to prepare for my bar mitzvah. I'd ride home with my dad coming over the business, really dinner and that was it. I do homework and I go to sleep. There wasn't much of a social life was the Warrens. That's a social butterfly. Now.

Jeff Dwoskin 9:57

You tell him an interesting story in the book about your grandfather making wine for paisa Passover and then being threatened by a neighbor. Yeah, I imagined during due to prohibition, and then your father taking care of that for you. For him,

Ed Asner 10:12

Mama father was a two fisted Yahoo. I never knew. I mean, he, he laid his hands on my brothers, but my brother was six years older than me, his TV and cheese beans evening. And finally, my dad would come upstairs and bless the hell out of my brother for teasing me and disrupting his car gig. And until I was a few years ago, my brother told me this story that he had just heard my father whipping on competitors, or people who challenged him on rugby. And it was very exciting, except that I could have used that thrill and adulation of my father. While I was growing up, I wanted

Jeff Dwoskin 10:57

to write but I enjoy the one story in the book about him taking care of that for your grandfather. That was, I imagine that person did not bother your family.

Ed Asner 11:07

My grandfather not raised this in offense at all. He was a Yiddish scholar. He died from a heart attack ensures sorry,

Jeff Dwoskin 11:19

imagine his orthodoxy guys, right. He spent a lot of time in school. So I imagine there's a story that you tell in the book about playing football on Kol nidrei, which I assume that cause some strife in the fan oil for a boy

Ed Asner 11:33

safe. Is that what you call it? I share the scars. I found out early, we were assigned to play Leavenworth was about 40 miles outside of Kansas City 30 to 40 miles on a cold nidrei night. Now did you even skip anything, but you don't skip COVID Very nice. I said RS shovel. I mean, I was a tackle. And there were replacement tackles, say replacement tackle the world would not collapse if I didn't play. So I mentioned that fact that we were scheduled to play on Clomid a night. And my brothers said, well, let's see if I can handle it. I love my brothers working on that. They came up striking, empty. I mean, my mother got it listed. And finally, dad would leave earlier than I would for school. And as he left for going to the business, he hollered up the stairs. Eddie, I'm begging you. I don't want you to play. I said I that I would accept the dictates of the family for that. But everybody was in on the conspiracy. I came down to breakfast faded. Mom said I don't want you to call home school, come home immediately. eat your dinner and get out of here. Every word dad comes home. Which I did. Everybody was interested in seeing that. I was free to play football. They were my mom said they did a quick word play football. And I was really prepared for the game dressing. The coach said, Guys, I don't want you going out there to win in this city or for wind out or mortar education or Kansas City Zoo once you go out there and win this pretty. Okay. So we went out there we beat their ass. I mean liverwurst, a small town, but I realized that as I'm throwing blocks throughout the day, they didn't need me, came home. The house is shelled was celebrants of Kol nidrei My father was already in bed, as my brother passed away. Everything's okay. All you got to do is get up early and go to show put in a very early appearance is your bone weary at a football game? So I dragged my ass out of bed very slowly. And my brother didn't refresh me adequately and we arrived, the show plate. My father saw us. He had a front view. And he picked up his prayer book and moved to the back of the shoe of the synagogue. My mother and I were left to look at each other and shrug. Finally, when a friend Jordan was born, to signal the end of the first day of Yom Kippur War, my father came up to the front to collect his stuff. My father, my brother went to embrace him. My father took the embrace it Getting the promo Gator of this offense? Well, I got to touch him somehow. So I kind of talked my way to his arms and gave him a heart. And I had overcome the disgrace of flying on COVID. Right.

Jeff Dwoskin 15:18

Thank you for sharing this story. The acting bug kind of hits you in college. Right? You vote you went to the University of Chicago, he started acting in plays was acting something you always wanted to do. And then you just kind of got into, Oh,

Ed Asner 15:30

I love to get on stage and be the center of attention. But I certainly didn't think in terms of refreshing and being an actor, was totally incidental to my life. I became an actor during my first year in college because I tried it, liked it and realize it could be a way of life.

Jeff Dwoskin 15:50

I love doing it. In Chicago, you were part of the playwrights theatre which became compass players, which became Second City, you did improv as well,

Ed Asner 15:58

I do I would do it. I was not a pursuer of improv. But many of my coaches and teachers taught it to be the only way

Jeff Dwoskin 16:07

you prefer like doing the plays like murder in the cathedral and Julius Caesar need a pisser axe and all those Yeah. And then you move to New York and you were in Threepenny Opera. with Jerry Orbach, Jerry Stiller and john Aston ambia I MBR there. Oh, that's quite a crew. Who else? Frank Terry was an amazing anyway. Anyway. Alright. So from there, you became good friends with Jerry Orbach the great stories in the book and in the met your your first wife, Nancy, there, I'd like to ask you that you said that she let you eat half a steak. That's how I fell in love with my wife, too. She loved me, she lets me eat half her meals. When a woman you want exactly

Ed Asner 16:50

right, I cheated her out of half of the steak later on. God will punish me I'm sure I won't see the golden gates. I don't know, I think I'll be denied that. And I should be messaging you. Put a note of fear your body. Same thing will happen to you possible that God will overlook your offense to your wife. It's possible. Not probable,

Jeff Dwoskin 17:19

but it's why you done so many other good things in advocacies and charity. So maybe, Yeah, that'll help get you in the gates

Ed Asner 17:27

by clicking this spirit of a blind man wants to say, I clean him up. Maybe God will remember that.

Jeff Dwoskin 17:35

I'm sure you got to work without it's a couple of times. That was interesting to read about it was

Ed Asner 17:40

wasn't thrilling, but it was nice.

Jeff Dwoskin 17:43

And one of the times Mary Tyler Moore was in the movie change of habit with you as well. Was it that was before the Tyler Moore Show? Or what was the timeline before? Okay, gotcha, gotcha. So, alright, so I was I was interested in your you worked with john wayne. And he he called you a new york actor, which he took is kind of a slight,

Ed Asner 18:02

they automatically is a euphemism for him since a Jew thing. New York.

Jeff Dwoskin 18:09

So I take it you don't you don't have much, much to say about john wayne then in terms of

Ed Asner 18:14

well, though, he was a leading anti communist. And I'm a big liberal. I must say I I'm not drawn to him. And I kind of got a kick out of enjoy him as much as I cheered him. So a

Jeff Dwoskin 18:30

combination. And then Jimmy Caan was in that movie with you as well. Yeah. Yeah. I liked how he does very like how he liked it related. You'd like to aggravate john wayne. Oh, Jimmy. Jimmy. Yeah. Oh, oh, he

Ed Asner 18:42

got him in a conversation about some national position. And what made Wayne feel that we are being betrayed by the national government. So he said he was on the main part of the discussion was that he had not been selected to play Pat. Dorsey Scott was he just got madder and madder and madder as he got madder and madder. Today call his hat. Started with the istigh. With cap. It was free of dust by the time you got through. And you got to work with Jimmy Caan years later. And else well, elf is one of our family's favorite movies Will Ferrell was magnificent

Jeff Dwoskin 19:30

in it. Yeah, welfare was incredible. You were great to the whole the whole movie. I when I told my kids. I said, I'm talking to Ed Asner, tomorrow. And at first I said Carl from up and then they left me Oh, because they love up and I said oh in Santa from else. And they're like you bury the lead? Because they love that movie. They love our kids. My kids are 19 and 21. Are you kidding? You're that old?

Ed Asner 19:57

Ah yeah, guard That's a disgrace. You're like, Rosie Cheech, teenager.

Jeff Dwoskin 20:05

Thank you. I'm dealing with a kid here. I think I'm just a little younger than your kids. Yeah. I'm always interested in like the events that happened that leads you to the things that you're most known for you were in house of green apple road, you play the sheriff you described as a schmuck and a buffoon. But grant Tinker saw that and grant Tinker was connected with Mary Tyler Moore. And he introduced you to Jim Brooks and Alan Blaine's and that's how you got the audition for Lou grant.

Ed Asner 20:33

Why would you know my history? I don't have to help you anymore.

Jeff Dwoskin 20:38

I want you to talk about the audition for the grant.

Ed Asner 20:41

Though I run in and I had an audition that much in my career. They had me read and I read it. Jim Brooks said, well, that's an interesting reading. When I mumbled something, like, try to be funny, but when we have your backwards read, redo Mary, pull all the stops out, you know, try every trick. Shrek do, yeah. You can do give it a fullness play or whatever the hell he meant. So I say Well, have you ever tried to have I don't know what he meant. So I said, Look, why don't you have me try it that way now. And if I don't cut it, don't have me back. I don't usually talk like that when I'm auditioning, or try and play. So they were taken aback by my iPhone three, he and his fellow producer. And I said, Well, we have another appointment, who happens to be Gavin MacLeod who ended up playing Murray. So he said, try it. I tried it, and I let it like I'm a sugar crazy person. They last very, very nicely row. And as I left, Jimbo said, Korea, just like that, we have you back to remarry. So that was in a week to 10 days. What the hell did I do? That did have been overwritten crazily, crazily when I was trying to figure out what was funny, what wasn't. So when I finally came back to reading with Mary, I read it as best I could do better original reading on the secondary. And I finished and they arrived again, they said, we'll we'll let you know. So I left. And Mary turned to them and said, Are you sure? The answer was? So Go figure.

Jeff Dwoskin 22:39

Go figure. The rest is history. So I wanted to tell you they you sent me sugar now which is fine. Growing up, my brother used to always ask my parents what's my Hebrew name? And I don't think they really knew his Hebrew name. They would always tell him it's Michigan up. always makes me laugh. So he spent seven years in a an amazing cast. I mean, I mean, besides you, Mary Tyler Moore course Leachman. Incredible. Valerie Arbor Ted night, Betty White Gavin MacLeod that you mentioned. I mean, this is an amazing ensemble. You must have had the best time.

Ed Asner 23:12

Yeah, exactly. What's amazing, is it. How do you figure Chad is dead? Okay, we have except that we have to what the ones that are dying around us are the women but they're reaching into the 90s. Now, cars is gone. Now. She was a hottie very worried is very fragile. Ted's wife. Yeah, Robbie, she's dead. It's Mary's dead. Just Gavin and me left now. And Betty

Jeff Dwoskin 23:40

and Betty. Betty is hanging on to he must have great memories of working with them. It must have been an amazing seven years. I mean, did you just with laughing

Ed Asner 23:48

a lot, and it was a life extender. I certainly wouldn't be my age. If I didn't have that happiness that was built up those years of working together

Jeff Dwoskin 23:57

is said at the time, Ted Knight was one of the funniest people you'd ever met period, Will Ferrell who was even funnier. It must be a joy to be around people to make you laugh that much. That show had three spin offs Rhoda Phyllis and Lu grants where then you went on to play the same character but in a drama winning an Emmy for both. One of the things that I read about in the book that I didn't know actually was after you ran and one for Screen Actors Guild president the whole you were blacklist and Hollywood What is it? like? What does that mean? Like? I mean, it means people won't hire you. But I mean, how does how does it get determined like it just because of the political differences and who keeps track of these kind of things like because you say like, I should be careful about

Ed Asner 24:45

like the word blacklist to be blacklisted. occurred when people's names were actually on a list. I said do not use this creature and everybody show him the lock step and didn't hire them. If I was on a blacklist, it was only by word of mouth, I would say I was not very shudder with the fact that the head of CBS got nervous about my being to pro liberal and with going down to South America and and preaching against the United States Armed Forces involvement in the governments of El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and the just the general stage of influencing them we we bring up lessons from Latin America and put them in at the School of the Americans, which was in the Salford desire market, remember where they will be taught the hard part rules of oppression and being leaders in Latinos? So I, I accused the president of CBS discrimination by his cancellation of Lou grant, because of my involvement in preaching against this instruction at the School of the Americas and probably rather prominent employers who were affected by his decision, who then followed turn and did not hire

Jeff Dwoskin 26:21

me. How long did that go on where you felt people are trying to avoid hiring Ed Asner? 710 years? I don't know. And then one of the interesting thing while I read that Charlton Heston was a real thorn in your face. And Clint Eastwood. Oh, boy, I was one is, I hope you were because it sounds like he was a real son of a bitch. Yeah, it was interesting reading it now without the political divide going on in the world now and in Hollywood today. Oh, this isn't new. You know, this is you know, I wasn't aware of anything happening. You know, I became much more politically aware in these last few years and but did read in your book about this and the divide that you guys had the pro Reagan, you know, liberal. Yeah. Is it was really interesting to it was an interesting kind of point of view I was not aware of I was absolutely not aware of it, because I was so young at the time also, but like, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I had to go through all that. It sounds like Martin Sheen was a good dude and put on an ad and he was I've been heard from him since maybe he's waiting for you to put an ad out for him. But it was still nice that he did that. So and then kind of like as you started to reemerge from what you felt was his blacklist, JFK one of those roles. Oliver Stone bringing you in getting to work with jack Lemmon again What was it like working with Oliver Stone?

Ed Asner 27:37

Oh, he's kind of shy and retiring. He's not a hail fellow. Well, met type was great being with jack Lemmon again, he's a cutie he's a nice man.

Jeff Dwoskin 27:46

I can imagine I did. JFK is one of my I love JFK is one of those movies that when it comes on cable, no matter where it's at in the movie, I will stop and watch that movie. I just I love that movie is great. Aside from Carl and UP, which everyone knows but you've done tons of voiceover work for me anymore. I don't know. What you see now when I looked at your IMDb you had like 19 things in pre production or fellow was big. You're the busiest guy in the world. Those inverts such Ingrid's Oh,

Ed Asner 28:18

come on. I'll take you taking you a page from Martin Sheen's book

Jeff Dwoskin 28:21

one question I wanted to as I was I was interviewing Jennifer candy. She was in the movie and vino with you. She had nice things to say about you and Sean young. Everybody I asked about Sean young has a bad reputation but you've worked with her a couple times now. And anytime I talk to someone who's worked with Sean, they have nothing but the greatest things to say about Sean young.

Ed Asner 28:40

Nice girl I document what she's done to other people but of those who defend her or attacker as they wish I will never attack

Jeff Dwoskin 28:51

Tommy you played Santa a few times. But Alice with john fabro and I know we've kind of touched on off along the way here Will Ferrell being one of the funniest people but also working with Bob Newhart right so was that just like if you consider like that your career revival like else like coming back from everything,

Ed Asner 29:11

you know, why they are certain big boosts the two pictures. Those are the two pictures I hear from fans almost all the time, UP and ELF. Big short vowel pronunciations I give to the industry UP and ELF.

Jeff Dwoskin 29:31

You've had you've made remained very in culture all this time besides elf and up. I mean, even most recently, you're in Cobra Kai, which is one yeah. Johnny Lawrence's father and Cobra Kai, which is one of the most recent biggest pop culture sensations to date and you are dead to me. I love that

Ed Asner 29:50

that series You were great and dead. The other one I ever those two, and I stared in amazement that people keep bringing this up. In casual signature requests, I found that the rules, some are unimportant and not eternal. Just amazing people single them out for correction or greatness.

Jeff Dwoskin 30:14

I think it's just having Ed Asner. At every stage of your life. When I talked to my mother in law, she's like Lou grant, or Mary Tyler Moore, my kids, you know, and like, and then like it just always kind of knowing at Azur throughout the years, it is great to see a pop up and all these things and like remain so relevant and, and to have every generation know who you are. I think that's, that's great. Not everyone can not everyone has that be your modern bar. I mean, besides Lou grant, what is the main roles you would want people to think of when they think of you other than the ones we just kind of talked about what you didn't feel were the word they went? Oh, besides the grant, I was leaving out a huge chunk.

Ed Asner 30:59

Well, when I first came to New York, I used to teach them for almost three years, that was a big part of my life. And those are the areas of my life where I've been

Jeff Dwoskin 31:10

affected and affected people. Now you've got an amazing body of work, and then you still do the plays do. You've gone back door now which

Ed Asner 31:20

a couple of plays that one was written for me by Ed Weinberger, who's a former producer, writer, on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and that's called Scott Manor. Plus, very fun, well written piece. And the the other play was written by Sam Joseph Parker, and it's a political piece I played God is called, God help us. It's my attempt to bring back together a couple that fell out with each other. They were lovers for a while. But they fell out because of political differences. So I try to encourage them to walk in each other's shoes. It's funny too.
